Allotments: We Need Them Now More Than Ever

Save the alotments in the UK

AGENTS OF FIELD

It’s a big week for allotment gardeners here in the UK. As Sara-Jane Trebar, who spearheaded the fight to Save Farm Terrace allotments (and won), launches a national campaign to help protect the UK’s allotment sites in response to the startling number of allotment closures over the past few years, campaigners in Bristol have taken to the trees in protest over the proposed MetroBus development that will destroy some of the most valuable food-growing land in the country.

Allotments, as we know them, have been part of our cultural heritage since the Victorian age when local authorities were obligated to allocate land to the common people, enabling them to grow their own food. The year of the soil

I really thought both of these links post were well written and brings up the urgency of the earth’s eco system being protected now. I just do not understand those who support industrialised farming. If this type of farming was so effective and successful, why is our soil in such a sorry state? Why are we losing so much top soil with these farming techniques? Why is the soil lacking so many mineral and bacteria which makes a healthy soil? Why does the food grown have such low nutritional value? Why are droughts being created? Why is drinking water being contaminated? Why are we losing so much of our wildlife ( birds, bees, butterflies, frogs, bats…)?  I could just go on and on and ask even more questions. If the pesticides and insecticides are working so effectively, then why are dosages need are on the rise? It does not take a genius to see this system does not work.

I realize the articles and movies below are long. They are well worth your time. I was staggered by some of the facts.
