Anti-Austerity Syriza Party Sweeps to Power in Greece
Syrizia party wins in Greece’s election yesterday.
The anti-austerity Syriza Party has won the Greek election; Alexis Tsipras is Prime Minister of Greece. (At this time, he has already been signed in.)
While we may expect struggles within the European economy, it is a victory for The People everywhere. Sen. Bernie Sanders says, ‘The Syriza victory in the Greek elections tell us that people around the world will no longer accept austerity for working families while the rich continue to get much richer.’
The leftist, anti-austerity Syriza Party has swept to victory in Greece. Syriza won 149 seats in the 300-seat parliament, two short of an absolute majority. This marks the first time since the economic crisis in 2009 that a member of the 19-nation euro zone will be led by a party rejecting German-backed austerity. The head of Syriza, Alexis Tsipras, will become Greek’s new Prime Minister.
